Retainers After Braces in Dubai Marina

The day your braces come off is a big moment, but it is not the end of your treatment. Your teeth are in their new positions, and the bone and gums around them are still settling. A retainer is what keeps them there.

At Queens Elite Medical in Dubai Marina we fit retainers for patients finishing braces, including metal, ceramic and Damon braces. This page explains why you need a retainer after braces, which types we fit, what happens on the day your braces come off, how long to wear it, and how to look after it. For a full guide to every retainer type, see our page on teeth retainers in Dubai.

Do You Need a Retainer After Braces?

Yes. Braces move your teeth, but they do not fix them there. The ligaments that hold each tooth, and the bone around it, take time to adapt to the new positions. During that time the teeth tend to move back toward where they started, a change called relapse. A retainer holds your teeth still while the bone and gums settle. It is the final stage of orthodontic treatment, and skipping it puts the work you did with braces at risk.

What Happens If You Don't Wear Your Retainer After Braces?

Relapse is gradual, so you may not notice it until your smile has changed. If you have stopped wearing your retainer for a while, do not force it back on. Book a check first. See our page on replacing a lost or broken retainer.

How Long Do You Wear a Retainer After Braces?

Most patients wear a retainer all day at first, then move to nights only. Your orthodontist sets your own schedule and adjusts it as your results hold.

Stage Typical wear Notes
First 3–6 months after braces come off Full-time, removed only to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean Your orthodontist confirms the hours
After that Nights only Many patients continue long-term
Fixed retainer Always in place Needs regular check-ups

Do not stop wearing your retainer without asking. If you want to reduce wear, book a check first.

Which Retainer Is Used After Braces?

Your orthodontist chooses the retainer after checking your teeth, your bite and your habits. The same options are used after metal braces, ceramic braces and Damon braces. These are the ones we fit most often after braces.

Hawley Retainer

A Hawley retainer is made of a metal wire across the front teeth and an acrylic plate that rests against the palate or the inside of the lower teeth. It is durable, can be adjusted by your orthodontist, and comes in different colours. It is a common first retainer after metal braces.

Essix (Clear) Retainer

An Essix retainer is a thin, clear tray made to fit over your teeth. It is almost invisible, easy to take out for eating and cleaning, and comfortable for most people. It suits patients who prefer a retainer that does not show.

Fixed (Lingual) Retainer

A fixed retainer is a thin wire bonded to the back of the front teeth. It cannot be taken out, so it holds those teeth in place all day. It is often used on the lower front teeth, sometimes together with a removable retainer on the upper teeth. It needs careful cleaning.

Vivera Retainers

Vivera retainers are clear retainers made from a digital scan of your teeth and supplied as a set. They are available after braces as well as after Invisalign.

My Retainer Feels Tight

Some tightness in the first few days is normal. If it stays tight, or will not go on, do not force it. Book a check, because your teeth may have moved.

My Retainer Has Rubbed My Gums or Tongue

A little soreness in the first days can happen while your mouth gets used to it. If it keeps rubbing or causes sores, book a check so we can adjust it.

I Lost or Broke My Retainer

Book a replacement as soon as you can. See how to replace a lost or broken retainer.

My Fixed Retainer Feels Loose

Contact us as soon as you can. The wire may have come away from a tooth, and teeth can move once it has.

I Have Stopped Wearing My Retainer

Book a check before you put it back in. If your teeth have moved, the orthodontist will tell you whether a new retainer is enough or whether you need more treatment.

Questions About Retainers After Braces

Yes. Teeth move back after any orthodontic treatment, including braces. A retainer holds them in their new positions.

How long do I wear a retainer after braces?

Most patients wear it full-time for the first 3–6 months, then at night. Many continue night wear long-term. Your orthodontist sets your schedule.

Which retainer is right after braces?

There is no single answer. Hawley, Essix and fixed retainers all work, and your orthodontist recommends the one that suits your teeth, your bite and your habits.

Is a Hawley or an Essix retainer better after braces?

It depends. A Hawley retainer is durable and adjustable, while an Essix retainer is clear and almost invisible. Your orthodontist will advise you.
