Fixed Retainer Dubai
A fixed retainer is a thin wire bonded to the back of your front teeth. It holds them in place all day and night, so you do not have to remember to wear anything. No one can see it from the front, and it is a popular choice after braces and Invisalign.
It also needs more care than people expect. The wire is hard to clean, and if it comes loose your teeth can start to move without you noticing. This page explains how a fixed retainer works, who it suits, how to clean it, and what to do if something goes wrong. For all the retainer types we fit, see our page on teeth retainers in Dubai.
What Is a Fixed Retainer?
A fixed retainer, also called a bonded or lingual retainer, is a thin metal wire attached to the inside surface of your teeth with dental bonding material. It is usually placed on the lower front teeth, and sometimes on the upper front teeth.
You may also hear it called a permanent retainer. That name is misleading. It stays in place for as long as you and your orthodontist decide, but your orthodontist can remove or replace it at any time.
How Does a Fixed Retainer Work?
Who Is a Fixed Retainer Right For?
- You do not want to remember to wear a retainer every night.
- You are likely to lose or forget a removable retainer.
- Your front teeth tend to shift or crowd after treatment.
- You want a retainer that cannot be seen
- You find it hard to clean carefully around the wire.
- You have gum disease or a lot of plaque build-up that has not been treated.
- Your bite or tooth position makes bonding difficult.
Fixed vs Removable Retainers: Pros and Cons
Both types hold your teeth in their new positions. The difference is whether you take the retainer out, and how much care it needs. Your orthodontist recommends the one that suits your teeth and your habits.
| Fixed Retainer | Removable Retainer | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | A thin wire bonded to the back of the teeth | A clear tray or wire-and-acrylic plate you put in and take out |
| Pros | Works all day without you having to remember it. Cannot be lost. Not visible from the front. | Easy to take out for eating and cleaning. Easy to brush and floss your teeth. Can be replaced if it is lost or worn. |
| Cons | Harder to clean around. Plaque and tartar can build up. The wire can come loose or snap, and needs a visit to fix. | Only works when you wear it. Can be lost, broken or left behind. Clear retainers wear out over time. |
| Cleaning | Floss threader or interdental brush under the wire | Brush and rinse daily; soak weekly |
| Best for | Patients who want long-term, always-on retention, often on the lower front teeth | Patients who prefer to take it out, or who need to protect their teeth at night |
Many patients use both: a fixed retainer on the lower teeth and a removable one on the upper teeth. For the full range of options, see our teeth retainers in Dubai page.
What Happens at Your Fixed Retainer Appointment
Fitting a fixed retainer is quick and usually painless. Your orthodontist checks your teeth, cleans and dries the back of the front teeth, and measures a thin wire to fit them. The wire is then bonded in place with a dental adhesive and set with a curing light.
Most patients feel a thin wire behind their teeth for a few days. Your tongue may feel it more than your teeth do, and this settles quickly. Your orthodontist checks your bite before you leave, so the wire does not catch when you close your teeth
How to Clean a Fixed Retainer
A fixed retainer cannot be taken out, so plaque collects around the wire more easily than around bare teeth. Cleaning it well protects your gums and keeps your teeth looking their best.
• Brush along the wire and around each bonded tooth with a soft toothbrush, at least twice a day.
• Floss once a day with a floss threader or superfloss, passing it under the wire.
• Use an interdental brush if your orthodontist recommends one.
• Keep your regular check-ups so the wire and the teeth around it are cleaned and checked.

You can eat normally with a fixed retainer, but a few foods can loosen the wire or bend it.
Contact us as soon as you can. The wire may have come away from a tooth, and teeth can move once it has.
- Avoid biting hard foods such as ice, hard sweets and nuts with your front teeth. Cut apples, carrots and bread into small pieces.
- Limit sticky foods such as toffee and caramel.
- Do not chew pens, nails or your lip, as this can pull on the wire.
What to Do If Your Fixed Retainer Has a Problem
The Wire Has Come Loose
If one end of the wire has come away from a tooth, the other teeth may still be held, but the loose tooth can start to move. Book a check as soon as you notice it. Your orthodontist can re-bond the wire.
The Wire Has Snapped or Bent
Do not try to bend it back. A snapped or bent wire can scratch your tongue or lip. Book a check. If you need something to cover a sharp end until your appointment, orthodontic wax from a pharmacy can help.
Rough Edges or Sore Gums
A rough edge, or a sore spot on the tongue or gum, usually means the wire or the adhesive has shifted. Book a check rather than filing or cutting it yourself.
Rough Edges or Sore Gums
Tartar can form along the wire and the bonded teeth, even with careful brushing. A professional clean removes it, and your orthodontist can check the wire at the same visit. If the retainer cannot be repaired, a new one can be fitted. See how to replace a lost or broken retainer.
Fixed Retainer Questions
Is a fixed retainer permanent?
It stays in place for as long as your orthodontist advises, often for many years. It is not permanent in the sense that it can be removed, and it can be replaced if it wears out.
Does a fixed retainer hurt?
Fitting is usually painless. You may feel the wire with your tongue for the first few days.
Can I eat normally with a fixed retainer?
Yes, but avoid biting hard or sticky foods with your front teeth, as they can loosen the wire.
How do I floss with a fixed retainer?
Use a floss threader or superfloss to pass the floss under the wire, then clean between the teeth. An interdental brush can also help.
What if my fixed retainer comes loose?
Book a check as soon as you notice it. Your orthodontist can re-bond the wire before your teeth move.
Can a fixed retainer be removed?
Yes. Your orthodontist can remove it when it is no longer needed.
Do I need a removable retainer as well?
Some patients wear a fixed retainer on the lower teeth and a removable one on the upper teeth. Your orthodontist will recommend what suits you.
Does a fixed retainer affect my gums?
It can if plaque builds up around the wire. Careful brushing, flossing and regular check-ups keep your gums healthy.
