At-Home Teeth Whitening Kits in Dubai: Which Type Suits You?
Choosing a home teeth whitening kit in Dubai is harder than it looks. Pharmacies, supermarkets and online shops sell strips, pens, LED kits, trays and toothpastes, and they all promise a brighter smile. They differ a great deal in how well they fit, how strong the gel is, how likely they are to cause sensitivity, and whether anyone checks your teeth before you start.
This guide explains the main kit types in plain language, shows how a dentist-prescribed kit works at Queens Elite Medical in Dubai Marina, and sets out what results to expect, who should not use a home kit, what it costs, and how it compares with in-clinic Zoom and laser whitening. It is written with our DHA-licensed dentists, so you can decide whether a home kit is right for you before you book
• Custom-tray kits from a dentist suit people who want controlled, even whitening, have sensitive teeth, or want a follow-up check. At Queens Elite this is the Philips Zoom take-home kit, with trays made for your teeth.
• Whitening strips suit people with mild surface staining on the front teeth who prefer a lower-cost, do-it-yourself option.
• LED kits with gel suit people who like a guided routine, provided their teeth and any dental work have been checked first.
• Whitening pens suit quick touch-ups between bigger treatments.
• Whitening toothpaste helps maintain results but does not change tooth shade on its own.
No kit suits everyone. A short assessment with a dentist is the most reliable way to find out which option is appropriate for your enamel, your gums and any crowns, veneers or fillings you have.
At-home whitening kit types compared
All home kits aim to do the same thing: deliver a peroxide-based gel to the tooth surface for long enough to lighten stains. The differences are in how the gel is held against the teeth, how strong it is, and who supervises the process.
| Kit type | How it fits | Sensitivity | Dentist supervision | Best suited to | Less suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Philips Zoom take-home kit (custom trays, prescribed gel) | Moulded from an impression of your teeth | Often easier to manage because gel stays on the teeth, not the gums | Yes, with assessment and follow-up | Even whitening, sensitive teeth, planned maintenance | Anyone who wants a result in one visit |
| Whitening strips | One-size film strips | Varies with product | No | Mild staining on the front teeth | Crowded, uneven or restored teeth |
| LED kits with gel | Generic mouthpiece with a light | Varies with gel strength | Usually none | People who like a guided routine | People with crowns, veneers or gum problems, unless checked first |
| Whitening pens | Brush-on gel | Lower, short contact | No | Quick touch-ups | Whitening all teeth evenly |
| Whitening toothpaste | Brushing | Low | No | Maintaining a shade | Changing the shade |
Philips Zoom take-home kit with custom trays
A dentist takes an impression, or a digital scan, of your teeth and a dental lab makes thin trays that follow your tooth shapes. You use them with Philips Zoom professional whitening gel. Because the gel sits on the teeth rather than spreading onto the gums, custom trays are generally easier to keep comfortable. The dentist chooses the gel type and strength, and you wear the trays for a set time each night or day. The trays are reusable, so a short top-up course months later needs only new gel.
Whitening strips
Strips are flexible plastic films coated with gel. They are easy to buy and simple to use, and they work best on the visible front teeth with mild surface staining. Because they come in one size, they can leave edges uncovered, and gel can contact the gums. They do not reach well between crowded or overlapping teeth.
LED whitening kits
LED kits pair a mouthpiece and light with a whitening gel. The light is often described as an accelerator, but the gel and the contact time do most of the work. If you have crowns, veneers, large fillings or sensitive teeth, ask a dentist to check your suitability before using one.
Whitening pens and toothpaste
Pens are portable and useful for small touch-ups, but the gel is easily wiped away by saliva, so results are limited. Whitening toothpastes remove surface stains with mild abrasives or low-level peroxide. They are a good way to keep a shade you have already achieved. They are unlikely to lighten teeth by several shades on their own.

What you will do each night
Looking after your trays
How many shades lighter, and for how long?
Results vary from person to person. They depend on your starting shade, the type of staining, how consistently you wear the trays and how your teeth respond to the gel. Yellow or brown age-related staining usually responds well, while grey tones from medication or injury, and white spots, respond less predictably.
Dentists often measure shade with the VITA shade guide, which ranks tooth shades from lightest to darkest.Crowns, veneers, bonding and fillings do not change colour, so your dentist plans around them. Whitening is usually done before replacing visible restorations so the new work can be matched to your final shade.

Cost and what's included
How much does a home teeth whitening kit cost in Dubai?
At Queens Elite Medical, a custom-fitted home whitening kit costs between AED 800 and AED 1,200. Your dentist confirms the exact price at your consultation, before any trays are made. If you would also like an in-clinic session, our Premium Whitening Package at AED 1,850 includes the home kit, a Zoom whitening session, a free deep cleaning and an OPG X-ray.
What is included in the Queens Elite home whitening kit?
Each kit includes:
- Custom-fitted whitening trays made for your teeth
- Professional whitening gel
- Desensitising gel
- Whitening toothpaste
- A personalised treatment guide
- A follow-up consultation
Why does a dentist-supervised kit cost more than a pharmacy or online kit?
A dentist-supervised kit is built around your mouth. Your dentist checks your teeth and gums first, your trays are made to fit your teeth, and the gel is chosen for you. You also get a follow-up consultation. Shop-bought kits use one-size-fits-all trays or strips and don't include an assessment or follow-up.
Can I pay for my home whitening kit in instalments?
Yes. You can spread the cost with Tabby, Tamara or Toothpick. Ask our team on WhatsApp or at reception which option suits you.
Is it better to buy the home kit alone or the Premium Whitening Package?
It depends on what you want. The kit alone suits you if you prefer gradual whitening at home, or want to maintain a shade you already have. The Premium Package at AED 1,850 suits you if you want a faster start in the clinic and a kit to top up at home. It also includes a deep cleaning and an OPG X-ray. Zoom whitening with a deep cleaning is AED 1,125 on its own, so the package costs less than buying the Zoom session and a kit separately.
How it works
How does home teeth whitening work?
Your dentist first checks your teeth and gums. Trays are then made to fit your teeth, and you fill them with whitening gel and wear them at home as instructed. The gel lifts stains from the tooth surface over several days. A follow-up consultation checks your progress.
What happens at my first appointment?
We check your teeth, gums and any fillings, crowns or veneers. We discuss your target shade and take the impressions or scans used to make your trays. If something needs treating first, such as a cavity or gum inflammation, we tell you before whitening starts.
How long do the custom trays take to make?
Custom trays usually take 2–3 working days. We then hand over your kit and show you how to use it.
How do I use my home whitening kit?
Follow the personalised treatment guide in your kit. In general, you brush, place a small amount of gel in each tray, wear the trays for the time your dentist recommends, then rinse and clean the trays. Don't wear them longer than advised or use extra gel, because that can increase sensitivity without improving results.
How do I look after my trays?
Rinse them in cool water after each use, clean them gently with a soft brush and store them in the case provided. Avoid hot water, which can distort them, and keep them away from pets and heat.
Results
How long does it take to see results?
Many patients notice a difference within the first week or two of regular use. Results vary with your starting shade, the type of staining and how consistently you follow your plan.
How many shades lighter can my teeth get?
It depends on your teeth. Yellow or brown staining usually responds well. Grey tones and white spots respond less predictably. Your dentist will tell you what is realistic for you at your consultation, so you start with the right expectations.
How long do the results last?
Results can last several months or longer, depending on your habits. Tea, coffee, red wine and smoking stain teeth again over time. Because you keep your custom trays, you can ask us about a top-up when your shade fades.
Will whitening change the colour of my crowns, veneers or fillings?
No. Whitening gel only changes natural tooth colour. Crowns, veneers, bonding and fillings keep their shade, so your dentist will check them first. If you have visible restorations, the result may be uneven, and we may suggest replacing them to match.
Which foods and drinks should I avoid while whitening?
During your treatment, limit or avoid:
- Coffee, tea and cola
- Red wine
- Soy sauce, curry and tomato-based sauces
- Smoking and vaping
If you do have them, rinse with water afterwards.
Safety and suitability
Is home bleaching safe for my enamel?
When used as directed under a dentist's supervision, professional whitening gel is a well-established treatment. Your dentist checks your teeth first and gives you instructions. The risks rise when kits are overused, ill-fitting trays let gel reach the gums, or whitening is started with untreated decay.
Will home whitening make my teeth sensitive?
Some people feel temporary sensitivity, especially to cold. Your kit includes a desensitising gel, and your dentist will tell you how to reduce sensitivity, such as spacing out sessions. If you already have sensitive teeth, tell us at your consultation so we can adjust your plan.
Who is not suitable for home whitening?
Whitening may need to wait or be adjusted if you have:
- Untreated cavities or gum disease
- Very worn enamel or exposed roots
- Mostly crowns, veneers or fillings at the front
- Known sensitivity to peroxide-based products
Your dentist will advise you after an examination.
Can I whiten my teeth if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
Whitening is generally postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding as a precaution. Please tell us if you're pregnant or planning to be, and we will advise you on when to start.
Can teenagers or children use a home whitening kit?
Whitening is usually recommended for adults whose permanent teeth and gums are fully settled. If you're asking for a young person, please book a consultation so a dentist can advise first.
Do I need a teeth cleaning before whitening?
A clean surface helps the gel work evenly, because plaque and tartar block it. A deep cleaning is included free with our in-clinic whitening options and with the Premium Whitening Package.
Comparing your options
What is the difference between a Zoom take-home kit and a standard home whitening kit?
A Zoom take-home kit uses trays made for your teeth with professional gel, and a dentist guides you through it. A standard shop-bought kit uses generic trays, strips or LED devices and usually has no assessment or follow-up. The difference is fit, gel quality and supervision.
Are whitening strips, pens or LED kits as effective as custom trays?
Strips, pens and LED kits can lighten teeth slightly, but they can be uneven because they don't wrap every tooth. Custom trays hold the gel evenly against all your teeth, which helps give more even results. Our page above compares each type.
How does home whitening compare to in-clinic whitening in Dubai?
In-clinic Zoom whitening is done in one visit under our team's care, which suits you if you have an event coming up. Home whitening works gradually over several days and is more flexible. Many patients combine them, with a Zoom session first and the home kit for top-ups. Our prices are Nano Gel whitening AED 960, Zoom whitening AED 1,125, and the Premium Package AED 1,850.
Can I use a teeth whitening device at home without seeing a dentist?
You can buy devices, but we don't recommend starting without an examination. Without one, decay, gum problems and existing restorations go unchecked, and over-use can lead to sensitivity or gum irritation. A short consultation gives you a plan made for your teeth.
