Impacted wisdom tooth removal

Impacted Wisdom Tooth Removal in Dubai Marina

An impacted wisdom tooth is a third molar that cannot fully come through the gum because there is not enough space, or because a neighbouring tooth or the jawbone is in the way. It can stay hidden, but it often causes pain, swelling, infection and damage to the tooth beside it. At Queens Elite Medical in Dubai Marina, we examine impacted wisdom teeth with X-ray imaging, explain your options clearly, and remove the tooth through a planned surgical procedure when removal is the right choice. Your first consultation is free.

What is an impacted wisdom tooth?

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to develop, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. Many jaws are too small to hold them, so a wisdom tooth can get stuck below the gum line or come through only partly. When this happens, the tooth is called impacted.
Impacted teeth are described by the angle they sit at and by how deeply they are buried.

Unlike simple extraction, surgical extraction involves a small incision in the gum and sometimes removal of a small portion of bone to safely extract the tooth.

Types of impacted wisdom teeth

Mesial (angled forward)

the most common type; the tooth leans toward the second molar and can press on it.

Vertical

the tooth is upright but trapped, often only partly through the gum.

Horizontal:

the tooth lies on its side and pushes against the neighbouring tooth root. This is usually the most complex to remove.

Distal (angled backward)

the tooth leans toward the back of the jaw, which can make it harder to reach.

Depth matters too. A tooth can be covered by gum only (soft tissue impaction), partly covered by bone (partial bony impaction) or fully enclosed in bone (full bony impaction). The deeper the tooth, the more involved the procedure.

Upper impacted wisdom teeth are usually easier to reach than lower ones, which sit close to the nerve that supplies feeling to the lower lip and chin. This is why we plan lower impactions carefully with imaging first.

Signs you may have an impacted wisdom tooth

Some impacted teeth cause no symptoms and are only found on an X-ray. When they do cause problems, common signs include:

Pain or a dull ache at the back of the jaw, sometimes spreading to the ear or causing headaches
• Red, swollen or tender gums behind the last molar
• Bad breath or a persistent bad taste, which can point to infection
• Swelling of the cheek or jaw
• Difficulty opening your mouth fully
• Food getting trapped around the back tooth
• Pain or decay in the tooth next to the wisdom tooth
Gum infection around a partly erupted wisdom tooth (pericoronitis) tends to flare up repeatedly. If you have had more than one episode, the tooth is unlikely to settle on its own.

How impacted wisdom tooth removal works

Removing an impacted tooth is a surgical extraction. It is more involved than a simple extraction, which is why it is planned in advance. You can read about our wider surgical tooth extraction service as well.
  • Consultation and imaging

we review your X-ray or CBCT scan and your medical history, and agree the plan with you.

  • Anaesthesia

the area is numbed with local anaesthetic so you feel pressure but no sharp pain. If you are anxious, tell us at your consultation and we will go through the comfort options available.

  • Gum opening

a small cut is made in the gum to expose the tooth.

  • Bone removal if needed

a little bone covering the tooth may be removed to free it.

  • Sectioning

the tooth is often divided into smaller pieces so it comes out through a smaller opening, with less disturbance to the surrounding bone.

  • Cleaning and closure

the socket is cleaned, the gum is closed with stitches (often dissolvable), and gauze is placed to control bleeding.

A straightforward impacted tooth often takes around 30 to 60 minutes, depending on its position. Complex or multiple impactions can take longer. Your dentist will give you a realistic estimate for your case.

When to see a dentist

Book a visit if you have recurring pain, swelling or a bad taste at the back of your mouth, even if it settles. Early assessment usually means a simpler procedure. If you have a swollen face or jaw, fever, or trouble opening your mouth, contact us the same day or see our emergency dentist in Dubai Marina. If you have difficulty swallowing or breathing, go to the nearest emergency department.

How we diagnose an impacted wisdom tooth

Your dentist examines the area and takes a panoramic X-ray (OPG) that shows the position of all four wisdom teeth, the neighbouring molars and the jawbone. When a lower tooth sits close to the nerve canal, or an upper tooth is near the sinus, a 3D CBCT scan gives a more precise view so the surgery can be planned safely. Read more about our dental X-ray, OPG and CBCT scans.

After the scan, we explain what we see, whether the tooth needs to come out, and the options available, including monitoring a tooth that is not causing problems.

Recovery after impacted wisdom tooth removal

Recovery varies with how deep the tooth was and how many teeth were removed. A typical timeline looks like this:

When What to expect
First 24 hours Light oozing is normal. Bite on gauze, rest, keep your head raised, and avoid spitting, rinsing hard, smoking and using straws.
Days 2 to 3 Swelling and stiffness are usually at their peak, then start to ease. Cold packs in the first day and soft, cool foods help.
Days 4 to 7 Discomfort settles. Rinse gently with warm salt water after meals as advised. Stitches are checked or dissolve.
Weeks 1 to 2 The gum closes over the socket. Most people are back to their normal routine well before this point.

Most patients return to desk work within a few days, but we advise taking it easy for the first 2 to 3 days. Follow the written aftercare instructions we give you, and call us if pain gets worse after day 3 or you notice a bad taste, as these can signal a dry socket or infection. Risks and complications

Removing an impacted wisdom tooth is a routine procedure, but like any surgery it carries risks. Planning with imaging helps us reduce them. They include:

• Dry socket: the blood clot is lost from the socket, causing a deep ache a few days after surgery. It is treated with a medicated dressing.
• Infection: usually managed with good cleaning and, when needed, antibiotics.
• Swelling, bruising and jaw stiffness: common and temporary.
• Bleeding: light oozing is normal; heavier bleeding needs a call to us.
• Nerve irritation: for lower teeth, temporary numbness of the lip, chin or tongue can occur. It is uncommon and we discuss it with you beforehand.
• Sinus involvement: for upper teeth near the sinus, which we check on the scan.
• Effect on neighbouring teeth: which is one reason an impacted tooth is sometimes removed early.

Your dentist will explain the risks that apply to your own tooth before you decide.

Impacted wisdom tooth removal cost in Dubai

The cost depends on the tooth, not a fixed rate. The main factors are how deeply the tooth is impacted, its angle, how many teeth are removed, the imaging needed (OPG or CBCT), the type of anaesthesia, and follow-up visits. A tooth under the gum and bone costs more to remove than one that has partly come through.

Your consultation is free, and you receive a clear treatment plan and cost after your examination and X-ray, before any treatment begins. Instalment options are available through Tabby, Tamara and Toothpick. We provide reimbursement documentation you can use to claim from your insurer, depending on your policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is removing an impacted wisdom tooth painful?

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure and movement but not sharp pain. Some soreness afterwards is normal and is usually managed with the pain relief your dentist advises.

Do all impacted wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Not always. A tooth that is fully buried, causes no symptoms and shows no changes on X-ray may only need monitoring. Teeth that cause pain, repeated infection, decay or damage to the neighbouring tooth are usually removed.

How long does recovery take?

Swelling peaks around days 2 to 3 and eases within a week. The gum usually closes over 1 to 2 weeks. Healing varies from person to person.

Can I remove all four wisdom teeth at once?

Sometimes. It depends on their position, your health and your preference. We can plan one side at a time or all four, and explain the trade-offs at your consultation.

What can I eat after surgery?

Soft, cool foods such as yoghurt, soup, mashed potato and smoothies (with a spoon, not a straw) for the first few days. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy and hard foods until you are comfortable.

Can I go to work the next day?

Many patients rest for 2 to 3 days. It depends on how complex the removal was and how you feel.

What is the difference between a simple and an impacted wisdom tooth extraction?

A simple extraction removes a tooth that has fully erupted. An impacted tooth needs a surgical extraction, with a gum incision and sometimes bone removal.

How much does it cost, and do you offer a free consultation?

Yes, consultations are free. The cost is confirmed after your X-ray, because it depends on the tooth's position and depth.
